The term 'laser' is an acronym for 'light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation'. A ruby cristal laser was the first practical laser developed by Maiman in 1959. Then, other laser systems have taken decades to enhance for use in medical and other applications. As long as the laser technology gets improvement, the clinical applications in dermatology will also continue to increase. Within this framework; if we want to gain more effective and reliable results while treating our patients with lasers, we had better learn how lasers work and what kinds of lasers are available for our patients. In this article, we will share some information about lasers which may be crucial for their use in our treatments, such as general information, working principles, photo-biological effects and types of lasers. 'Lazer' terimi İngilizce 'light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation' kelimelerinin baş harflerinden meydana gelmektedir. 1959 yılında Maiman tarafından geliştirilen, pratikteki ilk lazer Ruby kristal lazerdir. Akabinde diğer lazer sitemlerinin medikal ve diğer uygulamalarda kullanımı yılları içerisinde artmıştır. Lazer teknolojileri geliştikçe, dermatolojideki klinik uygulamaları da artmaya devam edecektir. Bu kapsamda; hastalarımızı lazerle tedavi ederken daha etkili ve güvenilir sonuçlar almak istiyorsak lazerlerin çalışma mekanizmasını ve hangi çeşit lazerlerin tedavide uygun olduğunu bilmemiz iyi olacaktır. Bu derlemede; biz lazerler hakkında genel bilgi, çalışma prensipleri, foto-bioyolojik etkileri ve lazer tipleri gibi tedavide önemli olabilecek bilgileri paylaşacağız. Anahtar Kelimeler: Lazer, giriş
