Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder affecting 1-3% of the population and psoriatic patients constitute 6-8% of the attendants of outpatient dermatology polyclinics. Though it is a common disease with well known clinical features, current studies have focused on the pathogenesis and the treatment of the disease while little research has focused on epidemiologic characteristics of the disease. The etiopathogenesis of psoriasis is related with immunologic, autoimmune, and genetic factors. Currently psoriasis has been considered as a disease spectrum or a systemic disease and there is a growing body of research on the pathogenesis, associating disorders and treatment of the disease.

Psoriasis genel populasyonda %1-3 oranında görülen kronik inflamatuvar hastalıktır. Dermatoloji polikliniklerine başvuran hastaların %6-8’ini psoriasisli hastalar oluşturmaktadır. Hastalığın yaygınlığına ve iyi bilinen klinik özelliklerine rağmen çalışmalar patogenezi ve tedavisi üzerinde yoğunlaşmıştır, epidemiyoloji konusunda veri daha azdır. Hastalığın etyopatogenezinde immünolojik, otoimmün ve genetik faktörlerin etkili olduğu düşünülmektedir. Son yıllarda psoriasis bir hastalık spektrumu veya sistemik bir hastalık olarak tanımlanmaya başlanmıştır ve hastalığın patogenezi, eşlik eden bozukluklar ve tedavileri üzerine yapılan araştırma sayısı giderek artmaktadır.
