Background and Design: Emollients are commonly used agents as adjunctive therapy during phototherapy and photochemotherapy. It is therefore, important to know if the emollients used interact in any way with ultraviolet (UV) light. In this experimental study, we aimed to investigate the possible effects of liquid/pure vaseline mixture, Nutraplus® lotion and Basiscreme® on minimal erythema dose (MED) and minimal phototoxic dose (MPD).
Material and Method: The inner parts of the forearm of 40 healthy volunteers were divided into 4 experimental test fields. The above emollients were applied to the 3 experimental test fields and no emollient was applied to one field, which was used as
control group. MED was determined in 20 of the volunteers receiving narrow band UVB, MPD was determined in 20 of the volunteers receiving PUVA.
Results: According to our study results, the mean MED score obtained after application of liquid/pure vaseline mixture was significantly higher than that in the control group. Nutraplus® lotion and Basiscreme® did not change the mean MED scores. In volunteers receiving photochemotherapy, the mean MPD score obtained after Basiscreme® application was significantly lower in those having skin phototype III when compared to the control group. No significant change was observed in the mean MPD scores after the application of liquid/pure vaseline mixture and Nutraplus® lotion when compared with control groups.
Conclusion: Emollients used before phototherapy and photochemotherapy can alter the UV transmission of skin. These changes can have a significant negative impact on the results and may contribute to long-term side effects of the treatment. According to our study results, we assume that liquid/pure vaseline mixture use before phototherapy may have negative effects on the treatment. Amaç: Nemlendiriciler fototerapi ve fotokemoterapi sırasında adjuvan tedavi olarak sık kullanılan ajanlardır. Bu nedenle kullanılan nemlendiricinin ultraviyole (UV) ışığıyla ilişkisinin ne yönde olacağının bilinmesi önemlidir. Bu deneysel çalışmada sıvı / katı vazelin karışımı, Nutraplus® losyon, Basiscreme®’in minimal eritem dozu (MED) ve minimal fototoksik doz (MFD) üzerine etkilerinin
incelenmesi amaçlandı.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Kırk sağlıklı gönüllünün ön kol iç yüzleri 4 deney sahasına ayrıldı. Oluşturulan 4 deney sahasından 3’üne
yukarıda adı geçen nemlendiriciler uygulanıp, bir deney sahası kontrol grubu olarak boş bırakıldı. Gönüllülerin 20’sine dar bant UVB uygulanarak MED, 20’sine PUVA uygulanarak MFD değerleri hesaplandı.
Bulgular: Çalışmamızda sıvı/ katı vazelin karışımı ile elde edilen MED değerleri ortalaması kontrol grubu MED değerleri ortalamasına göre anlamlı derecede yüksek bulundu. Nutraplus® losyon ve Basiscreme® ortalama MED değerlerini değiştirmedi. Fotokemoterapi uygulanan gönüllülerde, deri tipi üç olanlarda Basiscreme® ile elde edilen ortalama MFD değeri, kontrol grubuna göre daha düşük bulundu. Sıvı/ katı vazelin ve Nutraplus® losyon uygulamasının ardından elde edilen ortalama MFD değerlerinde, kontrol grubuyla karşılaştırıldığında anlamlı bir değişiklik olmadığı görüldü.
Sonuç: Fototerapi ve fotokemoterapi öncesinde kullanılan nemlendiriciler UV ışınlarının iletimini değiştirebilmektedir. Bu değişim, tedavinin sonucu ve uzun dönemdeki yan etkileri üzerinde önemli bir etkiye sahip olabilir. Çalışmamızın sonuçlarına göre,
