Extracorporeal Photochemotherapy: Mechanism of Action, Side Effects, Dermatological Indications

Extracorporeal photochemotherapy is an extracorporeal form of photochemotherapy with 8-methoxypsoralen and ultraviolet A radiation. Evidence suggests that there may be a potential role for extracorporeal photochemotherapy in the therapy of T-cell-mediated diseases and certain autoimmune diseases resistant to conventional therapy. Extracorporeal photochemotherapy has been used to treat various diseases, such as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, bullous disorders, connective tissue disorders, atopic dermatitis, lichen planus, psoriasis vulgaris and in the suppression of graft versus host disease. The exact mechanism of this treatment is not known. This review focuses on the dermatological diseases treated with extracorporeal photochemotherapy and side effects of it.

Ekstrakorporeal fototerapi, 8-metoksipsoralen ve ultraviyole radyasyonu ile fototerapinin ekstrakorporeal formudur. Veriler ekstrakorporeal fototerapinin T hücre aracılı hastalıklar ve klasik tedavilere dirençli bazı otoimmün hastalıkların tedavisinde kullanılabileceğini düşündürmektedir. Ekstrakorporeal fototerapi kutanöz T hücreli lenfoma, büllöz hastalıklar, konnektif doku hastalıkları, atopik dermatit, liken planus, psoriasis vulgaris ve graft versus host hastalığının baskılanması gibi çeşitli hastalıkların tedavisinde kullanılmıştır. Tedavinin etki mekanizması tam olarak bilinmemektedir. Bu derlemede ekstrakorporeal fototerapi ile tedavi edilen dermatolojik hastalıklar ve tedavinin yan etkileri genel hatlarıyla özetlenmiştir.
